When the Comment Isn’t Christian

Faithful Cycles: When ‘I Told You So’ Doesn’t Feel Good

Real Life. Real Struggles. Real Truth.

Truth Cycle:

There’s a moment I’ve never quite forgotten. One night at church, a youth showed up without his brother. Someone asked, “Where’s your brother?” The reply came: “He didn’t feel like coming tonight.” What came next stunned me, not because of who said it, but because of what was said.

“Well, he’s not a Christian then.”

Those words didn’t come from a stranger or a skeptic. They came from the preacher’s wife. And sadly, it wasn’t the first time she had cast judgment on that same family.

Here’s the truth: showing up to church doesn’t make someone a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes someone a car. Church is important, yes. Fellowship is a gift. But attendance is not the qualifier for salvation. Faith is!

Jesus didn’t say, “Come to church every Sunday and you’ll be saved.” He said, “Follow Me.” (Matthew 4:19) And sometimes that following happens in living rooms, in quiet prayers, in small acts of love that no one else sees.

Biblical Truth:

It’s moments like this, casual, careless comments, that drive people away from the church. Not from Christ, but from the building. From the people who should reflect His love and instead cast stones. This is the kind of rhetoric that leaves scars. It’s the kind of thinking that has more to do with pride than with faith.

The Bible warns us clearly:

“Judge not, that you be not judged.” Matthew 7:1 (NKJV)

And even more directly:

“If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.” James 1:26 (NKJV)

We forget that Christianity is not a checklist; it’s a condition of the heart. God sees the heart when we can’t. And He’s not impressed by perfect attendance, He’s moved by real relationship.

So let’s take this as a challenge. Not just to check our words, but to check our hearts. To stop acting like church is a club with attendance cards and start treating it like a hospital where broken people come to be healed.

Because maybe, just maybe, the reason someone didn’t show up isn’t because they don’t care, but because they’re tired of being judged by those who should be extending grace.

The Truth Cycle!
A cycle is a group of verses connected by a common theme or life lesson. Just as a single bit holds a sliver of data, each verse stands alone in truth but when grouped together in a cycle, they form a more powerful and complete understanding of God’s Word. For example, a cycle on trust might include verses like Proverbs 3:5-6, Isaiah 26:3, and Psalm 56:3, offering a full picture of how and why we trust God in all circumstances.
